Chair, Institutional Review Board, Lipscomb University: The role of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) is to review all proposed research involving human subjects to ensure that subjects are treated ethically and that their rights and welfare are adequately protected. The IRB is composed primarily of faculty members from disciplines in which research involving human subjects is integral to that discipline's work, researchers whose primary interests are non-scientific, as well as members from the community. The human subjects review process was administered through the Office of Sponsored Programs during my tenure. President, The Briggs Institute, Inc., Nashville, TN: Therapists at The Briggs Institute, Inc. provide mental health and relationship care services to individuals, couples, families, and groups. As owner and president of the Institute, I supervise all therapists; manage all billing and payments; create and update all case file paperwork; conduct clinical orientations; oversee record keeping including clinic wide and therapist statistics; create a marketing strategy; maintain the budget; and author the policies and procedures manual and all website, promotional, and advertising copy.

2014-2024. Clinic Director, Lipscomb Family Therapy Center, Nashville, TN: Therapists at the Lipscomb Family Therapy Center (LFTC) provide mental health and relationship care services to individuals, couples, families, and groups. My responsibilities as director included managing LFTC staff; creating and updating all case file paperwork; supervising student therapists at LFTC; conducting clinical orientations; overseeing record keeping including center wide and therapist statistics; developing partnerships with local businesses, non-profits, schools, and places of worship; creating a marketing strategy for the clinic; and I maintained the LFTC budget. Additionally, I was the lead author of the LFTC policies and procedures manual and a contributing author of LFTC website, promotional, and advertising copy.

2014-2024. Clinical Director, Lipscomb University MFT Program, Nashville, TN: As Clinical Director of the Lipscomb University marriage and family therapy program, I supervised student therapists; coordinated student internships both at the Lipscomb Family Therapy Center and at other clinical sites across the Nashville metropolitan area; tracked faculty, site supervisor, and student evaluations; and I oversaw therapist productivity as students seek to meet MFT program clinical requirements. I was also the lead author of the clinical policies and procedures section of the Lipscomb University Marriage and Family Therapy Program manual.

2017-2023. Chair, Institutional Review Board, Lipscomb University, Nashville, TN: As chair of the Lipscomb University IRB, my responsibilities included: writing and maintaining the IRB policies and procedures manual; overseeing the management of all research submissions; setting the agenda for the monthly IRB meeting; reviewing instruments and questionnaires used in human subjects research; consulting with the Provost’s office on campus research activity; reviewing new research submissions; serving as a secondary reader for complex research proposals; seeking out new IRB members as needed; training new IRB members; fielding questions from and consulting with university administration, faculty, and students on various research related activities; providing workshops to programs, colleges, or departments as requested; keeping up-to-date on federal guidelines for the IRB.

2015-Present. Licensed Marital and Family Therapist, Private Practice, Nashville, TN: I provide mental health and relationship care services to individuals, couples, and families.

2015-2024. Clinical Consultant, Tennessee Prison Outreach Ministry, Nashville, TN: The Tennessee Prison Outreach Ministry (TPOM) is a collaborative effort of over 400 volunteers and numerous contributors determined to address incarceration in the state. As part of their services, TPOM offers psychotherapy services to clients who have served time in jail or prison as convicted criminals. As a clinical consultant, I created all case file paperwork and developed the systems for tracking center wide and therapist statistics. I wrote the TPOM psychotherapeutic services policies and procedures manual and continue to provide professional consultation as needed.

2012-2014. Marriage and Family Therapist, Benchmark Psychiatric Services: I conducted individual, couple, and family therapy at Benchmark Psychiatric Services in Orland Park, IL. I saw clients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. This position gave me the opportunity to collaborate with nurse practitioners, neuropsychologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

2009-2012. Clinical Intern, Family Services: I provided individual, couple, and family therapy at Family Services in Lafayette, Indiana.

2007-2009. Therapist in Community Programs, Northwestern University: I participated in the community programs at the Family Institute at Northwestern University. At Beethoven Elementary School on Chicago’s south side, I provided counseling services to students and co-founded an anger management group called Managing Our Reactions and Emotions (MORE). In addition to my responsibilities as a MORE group facilitator, I also helped create the group curriculum.

2007-2009. Graduate Student Therapist, Northwestern University: At the Family Institute at Northwestern University, I conducted individual, couple, group, and family therapy.

2006-2007. Residential Treatment Counselor, Five Acres: the Boys’ and Girls’ Aid Society of Los Angeles: I was required to implement each child’s treatment plan; participate in group therapy sessions; provide the clinicians with clinically relevant information; redirect children in crisis; problem solve with children after psychotic, violent, sexually inappropriate, or suicidal behavior; teach living skills; and I kept the Department of Mental Health and the Department of Children and Family Services up to date on each child’s progress, incidents of violence, sexual misconduct, self-endangerment, and personal history. I also oversaw the upkeep of the living space itself and documented all repairs needed.

2005-2006. Program Coordinator, Glendora Community Church: I supervised the after school program for students ages 11-17 at Glendora Community Church in Glendora, California. I planned and supervised on and off campus youth events. I also prepared and presented the youth curriculum.

CLINICAL SUPERVISION EXPERIENCE

2015-Present. Approved Supervision Mentor, American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy: An Approved Supervisor mentor is defined as an AAMFT Approved Supervisor who has adequate supervision experience to supervise and guide a supervisor candidate. To be an Approved Supervisor mentor, an Approved Supervisor needs to have completed at least 300 hours of supervision of MFT trainees. Supervision mentoring is a service provided by an AAMFT Approved Supervisor to a supervisor candidate as part of the training requirements for the Approved Supervisor designation. The major focus in supervision mentoring is on the development of the supervisor candidate’s supervisory skills as opposed to a primary focus on trainees’ client situations. This experience should include live or recorded supervision sessions.

2014-Present. Approved Supervisor, American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy: This designation signifies that I have attained the educational, experiential and supervisory training required for the competent supervision of marriage and family therapists and trainees. I mentor, support, and nurture my supervisees’ strengths and resources, and provide a learning environment that ensures thorough MFT training and education. AAMFT Approved Supervisors are recognized for their breadth and depth of MFT clinical and supervisory experience, and they stay involved in the professional MFT community. As an Approved Supervisor, I work from a systemic orientation, using a variety of MFT theoretical approaches in my practice and my supervision is guided by the Responsibilities and Guidelines for AAMFT Approved Supervisors, set forth in the Approved Supervisor Handbook, January 2014 and the AAMFT Code of Ethics.

2011-2013. Supervisor Candidate, Purdue University-Calumet: I provided individual, group, and live supervision to marriage and family therapy graduate students. Franks. Grant Total: $39,906. On this project I wrote a coding manual, supervised undergraduate research assistants, and contributed to data management, cleaning, and analysis.

2010-2014. Relationships and Healthcare Lab Member, Purdue University: My collaborators and I sought to improve the health of patients and family members by enhancing adherence in the delivery of healthcare to patients, spouses, and family members. We collected data and examined interactions in the medical space (physician–patient/family member interactions) and in the patient space (family interactions) that supported or hindered adherence to evidence-based practice and to adherence to medical recommendations in the home environment.

Franks. Grant Total: $62,173. My contributions to this project included project planning and data collection and management.

2007-2008. Research Assistant, Northwestern University: I worked on a project that studied depression in the context of couple relationships. My research responsibilities included coding couple interactions and participating in a panel that evaluated data compiled by various research staff and I was trained to use the Structural Analysis of Social Behavior Observational Coding Scheme (SASB) designed by Paul Florsheim and Lorna Smith Benjamin of the University of Utah.

Manager, Update and Revision Project: Rules of Tennessee Board for Professional Counselors, Marital and Family Therapists, and Clinical Pastoral Therapists: The purpose of this project was to update and revise the laws and rules that govern the practice of marriage and family therapy and the license applications procedures for marriage and family therapists in the State of Tennessee.

2015-2016. Member, State of Tennessee Marriage & Family Therapy Task Force: The purpose of the task force is to work with Tennessee’s Health Related Boards and State legislature to revise and update the Tennessee Code Annotated § 63-22-101-150; the Rules of Tennessee board for professional counselors, marital and family therapists, and clinical pastoral therapists; and the eligibility criteria, policies, and procedures related to the application process for state licensure as a marital and family therapist.
